korean artist Xoo Ang Choi - DOOSAN Gallery

Choi Xoo Ang, the Seoul born artist and dark master of the imagination, has created sculptures at once hyperrealistic and completely nightmarish, making you feel as if your real life has bled into an inescapable, bad dream.

Twisted tongues, stitched backs and floating heads appear throughout Choi’s polymer clay figures, which display remarkable realism despite their fabulous content. Many of the pieces give metaphorical shape to real issues in modern day Korea, including human rights and abuse.

Choi Xoo Ang is an emerging mixed media artist based out of Seoul, South Korea who creates figurative sculptures out of clay and resin that examines human rights, society’s pathological state, and sex and gender politics among other themes.

Mad Men, episode 701: Time Zones review by Bo Abeille

My dad was Don’s age when my mom left him. Without her energy, the house we grew up in became cold. It was empty, yes, like the home Don and Megan shared; the home he bought specifically for her, so youthful and opulent, but it was also physically cold. I was 19 when they separated and living 400 miles away. I only visited my dad a couple times after mom left, and each time I felt like I was in a stranger’s home instead of my family home. Don’s broken door that won’t close and keep the safe warmth of love trapped inside is a perfect metaphor for the cold that inhabits a home without love.

My parents were only separated for a couple years, but my dad fell apart. Mom moved in with another man and created a nest with him, dad stayed single, alternating between behaving as if living alone was the best decision he ever made (mom left him), and wallowing in a frightening self-pity that led to extreme weight loss, strange religious choices, and losing everything that defined him as a person.

Eventually he lost the house. The last time I visited he was already moved into an apartment nearby and I went to the house alone to retrieve a box of childhood knickknacks he had packed up. The house was destroyed. In a rage, my dad had vandalized his own home, leaving it wrecked for the bank that was taking it from him. He had built the house, felt it was his, and took out all the emotion at losing the inhabitants that warmed it on its walls.

Holes were punched in the walls; he removed every flower from the garden from its roots; he allowed my brothers and their thug friends to graffiti the walls of our bedrooms; the eviction notice was stapled to the living room wall. It was madness, and it was the coldest building I had ever been inside. That night I tried to sleep there one last time; thinking memories and a positive attitude would keep me warm, but terrible shivers overcame me, nothing would warm me but leaving. Ever since that night whenever I’m extremely sad or frightened I grow unbelievably cold, like my body remembers how it feels to be betrayed. It’s an escape hatch my mind created – extreme cold means it’s time to leave. There’s no love left to comfort me.

So I left. I left my home, I left my town, I left my dad. Seeing him in leather pants with a closely coiffed beard, pretending like everything was going to be swell hurt just as much as seeing him unkempt and ranting, pacing, explaining why everything is for the best, and detailing how and why everyone had wronged him. He was alone, and sad, and no Pete Campbell tan, Roger Sterling sex adventure, or Don Draper quiet solitude was going to convince anyone that he was anything but completely miserable, and so terribly cold.

but, bbygrl, why a tura satana appreciation day?

[tw : rape]
she’s a total babe. duh.
she’s japanese, filipino, cheyenne + irish.
she was simultaneously a straight-a student in school while being viciously bullied for her heritage + size and punished by her parents for getting into fights. i mean, even without the straight a’s, she was strong and endured feeling isolated at home and at school.
she’s a fellow rape survivor — “Walking home from school at the age of nine she was gang raped by five men. According to Satana, her attackers were never prosecuted and it was rumored that the judge had been paid off. She tells how this prompted her to learn the martial arts of aikido and karate and, over the next 15 years, track down each rapist and exact revenge. ’I made a vow to myself that I would someday, somehow get even with all of them’, she said years later. ‘They never knew who I was until I told them.’”
she began living on her own at the age of 13, after her parents married her to a 17-year old and she wasn’t having that bullshit. i can’t even imagine what that was like.
she was an extremely successful burlesque dancer, and even when she got pregnant at 19 she danced through the first eight months of her pregnancy! and yeah, she still made BANK.
faster pussycat! kill! kill! — a cult classic john waters apparently calls the greatest movie ever made. i still haven’t seen it, but from what i’ve read it portrays the three female leads (tura satana is the LEAD lead) in positions or power that normally men are portrayed in, and that’s allll the way back in the 60’s. she did all her own stunts and fight scenes. the majority of satana’s styling and one-liners, and some additional key concepts of the film, were satana’s own doing.
after being shot by a former lover and staying in a hospital, she decided to study nursing and she did just that. she even briefly worked as the dispatcher for the lapd.
tura satana passed away on 2/4/2011, but she’s still amazing and one of my inspirations as a woc, especially as a mixed-race asian rape survivor struggling to embrace my sexuality. <3 and that’s why i’m giving her her own day! just who she was makes me feel good about me.
